We had no idea before this, the magnitude of all you do, every day.”

             ~ Kathy and Tom Volpe

Spring is a season of renewal – a reminder that even after the longest winter, life finds a way to bloom again. We find comfort in the inevitability of it, and in knowing that it will surely come.

When the Unexpected Happened…

We often think of hospice as a long, planned-for journey. But for some, the need arrives unexpectedly, and changes everything. This is what happened to Kathy and Tom Volpe as they found themselves in the middle of sudden and unplanned end-of-life care for a lifelong friend.

Tom and Kathy’s friend, Robert, had come to visit from afar for a couple of weeks. But within a few days, Robert started to experience concerning health problems. He suddenly couldn’t walk, and he was very weak. Kathy writes, “Once he started to go down, it seemed like he lost his will to live.”

…They turned to Hospice of Central New York and Hospice of the Finger Lakes…

After discussion with Robert’s physicians and with consideration of his wishes, it was decided that hospice care was the best option. Uncertain about what this would entail, Kathy and Tom reached out. “Your team was amazing, starting with the intake nurse, Madalyn”.

“The hospital bed arrived just in time. Bridgette came that same night, and she was so gentle and loving with us. Antje came the next night, and she was wonderful, too.” While calming reassurance was important, practical matters of care stood out, such as gentle guidance from “the doctor, which made it possible for me to administer his medication every two hours to help keep him comfortable.”

“And lastly, but far from least, Keziah, who came when I thought he passed. This lady was so incredibly kind, warm, loving, and empathetic. She is amazing, and I can’t say thank you enough.”

Three days. That was how brief this one hospice journey was. Its need was unforeseen, and its conclusion came sooner than expected. But every story of hospice care is a unique one, and our devoted, interdisciplinary team works together to ensure the utmost care, no matter the situation.
